About University

Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan, was established on 1st December, 1985.Late Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar, the first Chief Minister and the architect of Himachal Pradesh perceived the importance of Horticulture and Forestry to develop and improve the State economy which led to the establishment of this University. Its history lies in erstwhile Himachal Agricultural College, Solan, established in 1962 and affiliated to the Panjab University. It became one of the campuses of Agriculture Complex of Himachal Pradesh University on its formation in 1970. Consequent upon the establishment of Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya in 1978, this campus became its Horticulture Complex and finally in 1985, assumed the status of a State University, being the only University in the country engaged exclusively in teaching, research and extension in Horticulture and Forestry. Solan established in 1962 with its affiliation to Panjab University, Chandigarh. The College was raised to the status of Post-graduate College in 1965 when it introduced M.Sc.(Agriculture) programmes in some important subjects. With the establishment of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) in 1970, its affiliation changed to HPU and thereafter it became Agriculture Complex of HPU, Shimla in July, 1971. This Agriculture Complex further became Horticulture Complex of HPU and Himacahal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (HPKV), Palampur in 1976 and 1978, respectively. On December, 1985 this complex got the recognition of Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry.

Admission And Eligibility Criteria
  • B.Sc. (Hons)
10+2/equivalent examination with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology/ Mathematics/ Agriculture from a recognized Board/ University with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks (45% marks in case of SC/ST candidates) in the above subjects.
  • M. Sc.
B Sc Horticulture/B Sc (Hons) Horticulture/B Sc Forestry/B Sc (Hons) Forestry/ B Sc Agriculture/ B Sc (Hons) Agriculture/ B Sc with an OGPA of 6.00/10 under course credit system or with a minimum of 60% under annual system from a recognized University or degree from a foreign University with at least ‘B’ grade or its equivalent recognized by the University. The prescribed minimum marks shall be relaxed by 5% in the case SC/ST candidates and in service nominees.
  • MBA (Agribusiness)
B Sc Horticulture/ Forestry/ Agriculture/ Agricultural Engineering/B V Sc/Graduate in other allied fields with an OGPA of 5.50/10.00 (5.00/10.00 in case of SC/ST category candidates) or its equivalent under course credit system or with a minimum of 55% marks (50% marks in case of SC/ST category candidates) under annual system from a recognized University or degree from a foreign University .
  • MBA    
Graduate in any discipline with a minimum of 55% marks (50% marks in case of SC/ST category candidates) under annual system or with an OGPA of 5.50/10.00 (5.00/10.00 in case of SC/ST category candidates) or its equivalent under course credit system from a recognized University or degree from a foreign University with atleast `B’ grade or its equivalent.
  • Ph D Horticulture (Floriculture & Landscape Architecture, Fruit Science, Vegetable Science) & Ph D Seed Science & Technology
M.Sc degree in concerned discipline with research thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the programme in the concerned discipline from a recognized University under ICAR system of education with an OGPA of 6.50/10 (65% marks).
  • Ph D Food Technology
M.Sc degree in Food Technology/ Food Science & Technology with research thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the programme in the concerned discipline from a recognized University under ICAR system of education with an OGPA of 6.50/10 (65% marks).
M Tech degree in Food Technology holders with research thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the programme and an OGPA of 6.50/10 (65 % marks).

  • Ph D (Forestry) Agroforestry, Forest Genetic Resources, Medicinal & Aromatic Plants, Silviculture, Wood Science & Technology
M.Sc degree in concerned discipline with research thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the programme in the concerned discipline from a recognized University under ICAR system of education with an OGPA of 6.50/10 (65% marks).

For Ph D (Forestry) Agroforestry, the candidates with M Sc Horticulture/ Agriculture/ Animal Science with research thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the programme in the concerned discipline from a recognized University under ICAR system of education with an OGPA of 6.50/10 (65% marks)/ candidates with AIFC diploma will also be eligible.
  • Ph D Soil Science
M.Sc degree in Soil Science with research thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the programme in the concerned discipline from a recognized University under ICAR system of education with an OGPA of 6.50/10 (65% marks). However, if any seat remains vacant, the candidates with M Sc (Forestry) Watershed Management shall be considered on merit basis.
