Details of IIM Trichy PGP Selection Criteria

IIM Trichy → Indian Institute of Management Tiruchirappalli plans to have a batch size of one hundred and twenty (120) students for the PGP batch of 2016-18. This document details the process that would be adopted for selecting candidates for admission to the PGP at IIM Trichy for the batch of 2016-18. IIM T reserves the right to modify any part of this document including the various criteria and cut offs mentioned therein at any time till the admission process for the batch is completed.

Criteria for shortlisting


  • The admission process of  takes into consideration the candidate’s performance in CAT, performance in Personal Interview (PI) and Written Analysis Test (WAT), academic record and relevant work experience. 
  • The criteria that would be used to select candidates for Personal Interview and Written Analysis Test (PI & WAT) are shown below:

Venues

  • The Personal Interview and Written Analysis Test would be conducted at New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata. The exact date for PI & WAT will be communicated to the short¬listed candidates by IIM Kashipur which is co-ordinating the admission process for 2016-18 batch on behalf of IIM Raipur, IIM Ranchi, IIM Rohtak, IIM Tiruchirappalli, IIM Udaipur and IIM Kashipur (also referred to herein as the “new IIMs”).
  •  In cases where candidates have been shortlisted by the six new IIMs as well as older IIMs, IIM Kashipur would obtain the PI & WAT scores of such candidates directly from the older IIMs. Such candidates will be informed in advance by IIM-Kashipur, and they need not appear for the PI & WAT conducted by the new IIMs. In addition to the “six new IIMs” mentioned above, IIMs at Amritsar, Sambalpur and Body Gaya are also likely to join the combined PI & WAT process. In case of additional IIMs joining the process, candidates would be informed accordingly.

Criteria for select candidates post Personal Interview and Written Analysis Test 

The following will be the parameters and corresponding weight ages used to arrive at the composite score of the candidates, which will be used to prepare the final merit list for admissions.

Please note that the sub-parameters used under each head are also mentioned below, (for e.g., the WAT examines the candidate’s vocabulary, content of writing and writing skills).

  • CAT score →50 per cent weight age.
  • Written Analysis Test (15 per cent weight age) → Vocabulary, content of writing and writing skills
  • Personal Interview (15 per cent weight age):
  • Communication, attitude and personality
  • Academic efforts and disposition
  • Managerial and leadership attributes
  • Social awareness and disposition
  • Overall presence
  • Work experience (based on quantum of work experience) → 5 per cent weight age.

Performance at Undergraduate level: 10 per cent weight age. – This performance shall be measured by multiplying the percentage marks scored by the weight age applicable to the discipline as shown below. 10 per cent of the score so obtained shall be considered in the overall evaluation. [UG performance score = (per cent score at UG * discipline weight age)* 0.10] Differential weight ages, as shown below, shall be applied to different disciplines to account for the degree of difficulty in scoring in different disciplines (for instance, scoring in Engineering disciplines is easier than in Arts) as well as to encourage diversity in the batch:

  • Engineering / Technology: 0.6
  • Science → 0.8
  • Arts / Medicine (including Pharmacy) → 0.9
  • Commerce / Economics / Management →1.0
  • Master’s degree or Professional Qualification → 2 per cent weight age (Pass in the Master Degree / final examinations of CA / ICWA/ CS)
  • Gender Diversity → 3 per cent weight age for female candidates.

Selection Criteria

Indians and foreign nationals living, working or studying outside India who have resided outside India at least for the period January 1, 2015 – February 15, 2016 are considered as overseas candidates. Candidates residing in neighboring countries like Nepal from which there are no entry restrictions to India, are not considered as “overseas candidates”.

Application Form

  • Overseas candidates seeking admission to the two year residential Post Graduate Program me in Management should take GMAT and apply in the prescribed form available on our website. Completed Application Form along with the following must reach latest by January 30, 2016.
  • Copy of the latest GMAT score certificate (not older than 2 years as on January 30, 2016).
  • Two recommendation letters from two academic referees (preferably from professors / teachers who have taught the candidate in the recent past). Candidates who are working presently and are not able to submit recommendation letters from two academic referees, may submit at least one recommendation letter from an academic referee and the other from a referee in industry.
  • An application fee of US$ 200 or equivalent amount in Indian currency (by bank draft in favor of Indian Institute of Management Tiruchirappalli payable at Tiruchirappalli).

Eligibility Criteria

  • In order to be eligible to apply for Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM), a candidate must have at least a Bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks awarded by any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.
  • The equivalence of the foreign degree needs to be certified by the Association of Indian Universities. The percentage of marks obtained by the candidate in the bachelor’s degree would be calculated based on the practice followed by the university / institution from where the candidate has obtained the degree.
  • In case the candidates are awarded grades/CGPA instead of marks, the conversion of grades/CGPA to percentage of marks would be based on the procedure certified by the university/ institution from where they have obtained the bachelor’s degree. In case the university/ institution does not have any scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by dividing the candidate’s CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the result with 100.
  • Candidates appearing for the final year of bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification examination and those who have completed degree requirements and are awaiting results can also apply. If selected, such candidates will be allowed to join the program me provisionally, only if he / she submit a certificate at the time of joining from the Principal / Registrar of his/her College/Institute stating that the candidate has completed all the requirements for obtaining the bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification on the date of the issue of the certificate.

Fees and Expenses


The total fee for the current batch is US $ 16,000 per annum, totaling to US $ 32,000 for a period of two years and it covers Tuition, IT and Infrastructure, Library, Books and Study Materials, Student Welfare, Medical, Admissions and Orientations, Placement, and Hostel Accommodation. In addition to the fee payment to be made in INR, admitted students will be required to pay boarding charges and refundable caution deposit in INR, as applicable to non-Overseas students admitted through CAT. All personal expenses including boarding are to be borne by the student and will be over and above the fee charged by the Institute.

Shortlisting and Interview

  • Candidates will be shortlisted based on GMAT score, academic performance, relevant work experience and letters of reference. Shortlisted candidates will be required to appear for an interview.
  • The interview will be held telephonic ally, or through virtual media such as Skype, during March or April 2016. The Institute will inform the candidate regarding the interview at least a week in advance.
  • The final selection of the candidate will be based on multiple criteria such as academic performance, relevance and quality of work experience, GMAT scores, letter of recommendation and overall suitability for admission to the PGP.
